The Launch of a Scientific Symposium by Dr. Ahmad Abboud and Dr. Fidaa Sheriqi
Entitled (The Origin of Earthquakes and Possible Measures to Limit Their Damage – Principles and Applications)
Last Tuesday, December 5, 2023, Al-Wataniya Private University witnessed the launch of a scientific symposium entitled (The Origin of Earthquakes and Possible Measures to Limit Their Damage – Principles and Applications) by Dr. Ahmad Abboud and Dr. Fidaa Sheriqi – faculty members in the Department of Civil Engineering / Faculty of Engineering – in the presence of the Vice President of the University for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Hazem Melli, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Abdulkader Al-Jundi, and a number of members of the educational and administrative body at the university.
Dr. Ahmad Abboud spoke at the beginning of his lecture about the origin of earthquakes, the most prominent factors behind their occurrence in general, and methods for measuring them. Dr. Ahmed Abboud referred to describing earthquakes according to the Mercalli scale, pointing out the most important measures that must be taken before and during the occurrence of earthquakes. He also discussed the possibility of predicting an earthquake in advance in terms of date and intensity, stressing that it is not possible to predict its occurrence.
On the other hand, Dr. Fidaa Sheriqi, in her lecture entitled (Instruments Responding to Earthquake Damage Using Seismic Isolation Technology), discussed the possibility of reducing the force affecting the building as a result of the occurrence of earthquakes and thus reducing the extent of the damage by using seismic dampers, explaining the principle of seismic isolation and the most important elements. On which the insulation process is based, starting with an explanation of the types of insulators and the effect of their presence on the behavior of facilities, ending with a statement of their material cost and the necessary requirements for their application to buildings, residential facilities, and others.
This lecture came based on the important need to increase the student and scientific community’s awareness of the most important possible applications for mitigating the effects of earthquakes and the resulting damage, which focused in its content on the possibility of putting science and knowledge in the service of the individual and society, as they were implemented according to clear and precise scientific foundations.
