Golden Tips for Choosing Your Economic Specialization

An Interactive Training Workshop at The Faculty of Administrative and Financial Sciences in Collaboration with The Business Development Center (BDC)

On Monday, May 22, 2023, the Faculty  of Administrative and Financial Sciences, in collaboration with the Business Development Center (BDC), held a new training workshop titled “Golden Tips for Choosing Your Economic Specialization” in the Central Auditorium of the college. The workshop was prepared and presented by  a consultant at the BDC, Mr. Zaher Al-Shirazi Al-Sabbagh, under the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty  of Administrative and Financial Sciences, Dr. Hayan Hamdan. The workshop was attended by Dr. Hazem Melli, Vice President for Academic Affairs at the university, Mr. Abdulkarim Al-Nassan, President of the National Union of Syrian Students at  Al- Wataniya Private University, as well as a number of expert professors and teachers.

The workshop targeted students from various majors in the college (Accounting Department, Business Administration Department, Marketing Department).

Mr. Zaher Al-Shirazi opened the workshop by asking students about their reasons for joining and choosing their academic branch in general, and the main motivations behind choosing their economic specialization in particular. Through their answers, it became clear that many of them entered college based on their desire and passion for  the academic field and to fulfill their future aspirations.

In the same context, Mr. Zaher Al-Shirazi Al-Sabbagh emphasized the need for continuous pursuit of goals by saying: “Passion for what we do is extremely important because choosing a field of study alone is not enough for success. It requires you to face two options: Either joining a job in the public or private sector, or working hard on creating a personal project that hones your character and earns you practical skills and qualities, most importantly success and commitment.”

The workshop’s first session summarized the professional landscape that graduates can expect to encounter, whether pursuing a career in companies and institutions or creating their own businesses. Mr. Zaher Al-Shirazi Al-Sabbagh explained the requirements of the job market for each economic specialization, including personal skills and qualifications that graduates must possess such as: (a desire and passion for work, personal traits such as accuracy, organization, planning and orientation, speed of accomplishment, management and leadership skills, and knowledge of accounting programs). This is necessary to gradually integrate into the job market and avoid professional mistakes.

The discussion session took an interactive approach between students and professors, that  Dr. Essam Bowaba – a member of the educational faculty at the Faculty  of Administrative and Financial Sciences – emphasized in his important intervention to students that economics combines science and art equally, highlighting the need to evaluate strengths and weaknesses before choosing a major.

This interactive training workshop is part of a series of previous interactive workshops on economics as a constantly evolving science that does not stop at any particular limit. Therefore, the Faculty of Administrative and Financial Sciences continues to prepare such training workshops within the framework of practical and professional development for students in order to prepare them with steady steps for entry into the job market.
