Idlib – Syria
December 8, 2025
Syria hosted an exceptional national sporting event to mark the anniversary of liberation, with the “Tears of the Stick” cycling marathon kicking off from Idlib Governorate in the north and ending in the capital, Damascus, in the south. Competitors covered a distance of 450 kilometers over five consecutive days (December 4-8, 2025), in a demonstration embodying the meanings of steadfastness, unity, and building the future.
Hundreds of cyclists from various segments of society participated in the marathon, including local clubs, volunteer and youth teams, amateurs, and professionals. The event was organized by the General Directorate of Sports and Youth in cooperation with the Syrian Cycling Federation, with logistical support and coordination from the Ministry of Interior to secure the long route.
Notable Participation of Students from the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Finance
Students Omar Shahoud and Obaida Al-Abrash, second-year students at the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Finance at Al-Wataniya Private University, joined this major national event. Student Omar Shahoud expressed the importance of participation, saying: “It was not just a sports race, but our way as athletes to celebrate the first anniversary of the liberation of Syria. It was a unique experience despite the hardship of the road, and it reflected the spirit of will and determination that represents part of our respect for the sacrifices of the Syrian people.”
The students affirmed that the experience carried feelings of pride, joy, and victory, and formed a living model of national cohesion. During the journey, the contestants participated in carrying the “cycling helmet” from the starting point in Idlib, to be handed over at the end of the marathon by equestrian champion Adnan al-Qassar to President Ahmed al-Shara’ in the Conference Palace in Damascus, as a symbol of gratitude to all those who contributed to achieving liberation.
